Vintage & Timeless Chic: Versace Safety Pin Dress

Naomi Campbell, Gianni Versace & Christy Turlington, 1994

In 1994, Gianni Versace unveiled his now-iconic Safety Pin Dress, which shot to its own sense of stardom when Elizabeth Hurley wore it to the UK premiere of Four Weddings and a Funeral that same year.

His design later became known as “The Dress” and it made the Versace brand a household name as manufacturers began to release replicas of it in boutiques around the world.

After massive global media coverage of the then-unknown actress in The Dress, Hurley’s career was lifted from the basement to the penthouse in a matter of weeks.

Fast forward to 2012.  Lady Gaga dares to step out in a work of fashion-art … and it does take guts because this dress seems to have been made for Hurley.  After Liz wore it, any one else would be judged against her — and that would not be fun.

If you notice above, not even the supermodels of all supermodels, Naomi Campbell and Christy Turlington, were able to fill out the dress in the way that Hurley did.

Yet, Gaga, the seemingly fearless, avant garde pop star, did a fabulous job reinventing the 18-year-old dress and making it her very own goth-rock-star chic.
